St Mary's People
Sue Williams – Parish Secretary
I have been Parish Secretary here for just short of 20 years – a job that I thoroughly enjoy and one which is not like going out to work! Previously I worked as a secretary at a Citroen Garage for 12 years, and the difference and atmosphere could not be more poles apart. My office duties include everything from preparing the weekly newsletter, readings and service booklets, writing up registers and marriage certificates to keeping the accounts up to date along with various other office and ad hoc duties along the way.
I class myself as being part of the congregation of St. Mary’s, although I don’t attend on Sunday’s as I go to my own Church of St. Francis in Radford where I am Churchwarden. I also Serve, do Sunday Club and arrange the flowers at St. Francis so church is very much part of my life and something that helps me in my job as I have experience of how ‘the church’ is governed and how the church year runs. I am also on Diocesan Synod and am a Parish External Partner (formerly, Cathedral Liaison Officer). Both churches are different churchmanship but have many similarities.
Something that also takes up a very large amount of my time is Girlguiding. I run a very active Brownie unit at St. Francis and have done so for 30 years, regularly taking the girls away on Pack Holidays, Sleep-overs and various other trips – we have just come back from sleeping on HMS Belfast in London with 22 girls! I also run a Rainbow unit at St. Luke’s, Holbrooks. For the last 6 years I have been District Commissioner for Keresley District (helping and supporting 15 units and their leaders). My term of office has just ended but as from 1st January I take over as Division Commissioner for Coventry North – a prospect that is both exciting and terrifying in equal parts and one which sees me supporting 3 districts (Longford, Wyken and Keresley) with 35 units and their leaders.
My other hobbies when time allows is playing the clarinet (which I occasionally do in church), crafts and cooking. I am also married to Mick, so try as best I can to juggle these things around being at home with him and his work shifts!
