Newsletter - 25th July 2010

A warm welcome to you on this Eighth Sunday after Trinity when we remember St. James the Apostle. Please do join us after the service to share in a cup of tea or coffee. All ages are welcome at St. Mary’s, children included. There is also a crèche in the Octagon for the very young if you need it. If this is your first time with us, please do fill in the slip at the end of the newsletter, so that we can keep in touch with you. St Mary’s is fitted with a hearing loop system. Members of the congregation who have a hearing aid with a ‘T’ switch will find that they can hear better when it is switched to ‘T’.

Today Malcolm is taking the service at St. Alban’s Church and we welcome back Stella from Taizé.

Use of Prayer Tree
Some of us use the Prayer Tree in the foyer when we are aware of a person in need. Perhaps more that we realise, writing on a prayer leaf about someone in need, helps them and us. We shouldn’t be shy about our worries and fears. Please continue to use the green prayer leaves. It would help those of us who keep the board up to date, if you could write the date and your name on the reverse side.

Coffee Club
The Coffee Club meets next on Wed 4th & 18th August at 10.45am. Cost £1. All welcome

Roof Fund
You will remember that following the theft of lead last November PCC launched an appeal to raise the extra money needed to undertake the repairs needed. (The insurance company will only pay £5,000 for thefts of lead; our bill was £14,000 so we had a £9,000 shortfall). To date PCC has received £8,736.71 though this includes some money due to go to the Haiti disaster fund (Stella and I agreed that of our jump fund half should go to Haiti - around £500 I think) but it does not include tax back from Gift Aided donations - probably in the reign of £1,000 - £1,250. The amount also includes £192.50 raised by the concert Owen Vigeon put on in May. In total therefore we shall have raised about £500 over what we actually needed, so thank you very much.

Mission Help needed
During Mission2Grow in September we are hoping that members of the Parish would not mind offering one or two meals to the three Franciscans leading the Mission. The hope is that people would be host to one leader for one meal (or possibly two) of an evening. The team do not want to put people out and would not be expecting anything elaborate. If you could help out with this, please speak to Tony Thistlewood.

Car Pool Help Needed
Members of Mission2Grow transport group may approach you over the next few weeks to ask if you will join a car pool to provide transport around the parish for the three missioners during their stay (September 16th - 26th). It will be much appreciated if you can offer to help.

June Tote
1st Prize No. 49 K. Lashley £25.00
2nd Prize No. 35 J. Aspden £ 8.50

Your talents required…..
On Saturday 25th September, the last Saturday of Mission2Grow we shall be holding a talent show and need you to take part! Dust off your talent, be it a poem, monologue, musical instrument or dance and tell Tony Thistlewood about it. This is to be a fun event - not too serious please.

Advance Notice
PCC have decided to hold a Christmas Fayre on 27th November. A planning meeting was held last week to begin preparations for this Fayre. They have decided to call this Fayre the ‘Fairy Christmas Extravaganza’ and have prepared a list of proposed stalls. This list is on the noticeboard and you are invited to sign up to run a stall. When you sign up please could you also let one of the committee members know.

James the Apostle

Collect: Merciful God, whose holy apostle Saint James, leaving his father and all that he had, was obedient to the calling of your Son Jesus Christ and followed him even to death: help us, forsaking the false attractions of the world,
to be ready at all times to answer your call without delay; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

First Reading: Jeremiah 45. 1-5 Mike Wakefield

Second Reading: Acts 11. 27—12.2 Elizabeth Chester

Gospel Reading: Matthew 20. 20-28 Glynis Wood

Intercessor: Lorraine Baker

Hymns: 311 46 124 126 303

Post Communion Prayer: Almighty God, who on the day of Pentecost
sent your Holy Spirit to the apostles with the wind from heaven and in tongues of flame, filling them with joy and boldness to preach the gospel: by the power of the same Spirit strengthen us to witness to your truth and to draw everyone to the fire of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
