Newsletter - 4Th October 2009

A warm welcome to you on this the Seventeenth Sunday after Trinity when we celebrate our Harvest Thanksgiving. Please do join us after the service to share in a cup of tea or coffee. All ages are welcome at St. Mary’s, children included. There is also a crèche in the Octagon for the very young if you need it. If this is your first time with us, please do fill in the slip at the end of the newsletter, so that we can keep in touch with you. St Mary’s is fitted with a hearing loop system. Members of the congregation who have a hearing aid with a ‘T’ switch will find that they can hear better when it is switched to ‘T’.

The flowers in the Lady Chapel this week are in memory of George McMurray.

Harvest Gifts
Thank you to those who have brought cans of food and toiletries today. Our gifts will be added to those of the school children who will come to church tomorrow and given to the organisation Kairos, a group working with families who suffer the effects of domestic violence.

Wednesday Group
The Wednesday Group meets again this week at church 7.30pm - 9 pm. Please do join us if you would like to explore faith in an imaginative way.

In Depth Bible Study
The next session of this Bible Study Group will be on Wednesday 21st October. We will be looking at Matthew 5:13. Any queries, please see Stella or Lorraine.

Communion
In July the Bishop of Coventry suspended the use of the Common cup at communion and the physical exchange of the Peace. This suspension was lifted a few weeks ago with the provision that PCC’s should decide how to proceed. PCC decided after an extensive discussion to continue the suspension of the common cup but for the ministers to intinct the wafer with wine before giving it to the communicant. This decision was not made lightly for although the bishop has lifted his suspension, the Archbishops’ and the Health authorities advice is still against the common cup. We have also agreed to discourage the physical exchange of the Peace in view of the large numbers of vulnerable people in the congregation.

Mission Update
Please see the Mission notice board for information and a photo of Vio [Home of Hope, Romania]; also the latest newsletter from Yeldall. Sue Morton, [Mission Group]

Coffee Club
The Coffee Club meets next on Wednesday 14th & 28th October at 10.45 am. Cost £1. All Welcome.

We need your pencils!
The war in Darfur has meant that half the population of 8 million people have had to flee their homes, most living in refugee camps. In neighbouring Chad there are 500,000 Darfuri people in 14 refugee camps, mainly women and children. The camps have been growing over 7 years but in the last 2 years some aid agencies have pulled out and the children’s education is seriously threatened. The international charity React (Refugee Education Across Conflicts Trust) has offered to ship some supplies across. The Darfur Community in Coventry are therefore collecting: pencils, rubbers, rulers, exercise books, English/Arabic dictionaries, etc. Please bring them by 8th October to JoJo Cyber Café, 77 Far Gosford Street, Coventry. CV1 5DZ.

Thankyou
A big thank you to all who supported and sponsored me on my recent cycle ride around Coventry and Warwickshire churches. I managed to visit 20 churches in all and raised a total of £397.00. This money is divided between Warwickshire and Coventry Churches Trust and St Mary’s Walsgrave towards the repair of our church clock. We will also be able to reclaim from the tax man half of the gift aided return. Thank you once again. Barry Walker

Dream Master
RCN Furnishings have donated a bed to St. Mary’s to raise money for the Christmas Fayre. We have decided to auction the bed using a secret bidding system. Anyone wishing to make an offer can do so confidentially to Mel or Malcolm. Each week we will notify the highest bid on the notice board (no names) and the auction will continue. Closing date is 14th November (the date of the Fayre). If a bid is received prior to that date which we think is acceptable then we will close the bidding at that time. The bed retails at £180.00 and has draws underneath. Please see picture (Does not show draws) and details on noticeboard. If you wish to see the bed then it can be viewed at RCN in Henley Road, and we can make arrangements if you so wish.

Wanted - Can you help
Hannah Tyler is running the Christmas Stall at our forthcoming Christmas Fayre and is looking for items for her stall. If you have anything suitable please have a word with Hannah. Thank you.
