Newsletter - 31st May 2009

A warm welcome to you on this Pentecost Sunday. Please do join us after the service to share in a cup of tea or coffee. All ages are welcome at St. Mary’s, children included. There is also a crèche in the Octagon for the very young if you need it. If this is your first time with us, please do fill in the slip at the end of the newsletter, so that we can keep in touch with you. St Mary’s is fitted with a hearing loop system. Members of the congregation who have a hearing aid with a ‘T’ switch will find that they can hear better when it is switched to ‘T’.

Wednesday Discussion Group
Following the success of our Lent Groups this year, it was decided to have a monthly meeting on the first Wednesday of each month. Last month we briefly discussed the type of subjects we might look at and it was decided that this month would be a ‘Bring your questions’ session. Any question to do with church practice or faith is allowed (even though you may not get an answer - or the answer you want!). Such things as why the Paschal Candle and the significance of colours for the season are likely to be asked. No question is not worth asking if it puzzles you! Timing is 7.30 pm - 9 pm.

Insitution of Churchwardens
This takes place this week on Thursday at 7.30 pm in the Cathedral. Bishop Christopher will preside over the event and it gives wardens and others the opportunity to hear him. Please come along to support our wardens if you can though please note Barbara will be instituted at another time because she cannot be present on Thursday.

Ordination of Stella Bailey - 5th July
Stella Bailey will be ordained at a service in Coventry Cathedral on Sunday 5th July at 10.30 am. PCC have decided that it would be appropriate to support Stella on this occasion by encouraging as many people as possible to attend the ordination service. To that end there will be no service here at 10am on Sunday 5th July. We will try to organise lifts for as many people as possible. It would be helpful if you could sign the list on the noticeboard to indicate if you could either offer a lift or if you need one. The service at 8am will be held as normal that day.

Coffee Club - The Coffee Club meets next on Wednesday 10th and 24th June at 10.45 am. Cost £1. All Welcome.

Church Cleaning
As many of you may know, when our last cleaner went to university, PCC decided that due to our finances we were not able to afford a replacement and would need to clean the church and centre ourselves. We are in the process of drawing up a rota and wondered if you would consider being included. If we have enough people, you would only be on five or six times a year, so if you feel you can take part, please have a word with Kerry Tutchings who co-ordinates the rota, Barbara Hancox or Malcolm.

Mission Group
Gilead Health Development Please see the Mission notice board for the latest information from Nobby Clarke about Luweero and the clinic and community hall building project. Nobby last went to Uganda in February. He writes to thank St Mary’s for our continued support and includes a newsletter which gives a brief history of “Gilead” plus photos.

Walsgrave Community Fete - If anyone would be interested in taking on a stall at this event (in July) to raise money for Church Funds please have a word with Mel.

Our Quiet Day - On Saturday, June 6th, we are returning to St. John’s at Wolvey for a Quiet Day. It will last from 10 - 4pm. If you would like to enjoy a peaceful setting with a nice lunch and good company, please do take a booking form from Tony Thistlewood or Sue Morton this morning.

Bottles ….. please start collecting bottles of wine or spirits for our Christmas Fayre. Our apologies that this appeal is early but we need at least 100 bottles. If you can help please bring them along to church and leave them in the office or notify Mel or Alison. Thankyou.
