Newsletter - 4th May 2008

A warm welcome to you on this Seventh Sunday of Easter. Please do join us after the service to share in a cup of tea or coffee. All ages are welcome at St. Mary’s, children included. There is also a crèche in the Octagon for the very young if you need it. If this is your first time with us, please do fill in the slip at the end of the newsletter, so that we can keep in touch with you. St Mary’s is fitted with a hearing loop system. Members of the congregation who have a hearing aid with a ‘T’ switch will find that they can hear better when it is switched to ‘T’.

Music from the Movies
City of Coventry Youth Orchestra along with a choir of primary school children (including Walsgrave School) are putting on an evening of music from the movies. This will be held on 11th May at 2.30 pm at Warwick Arts Centre (Butterworth Hall). Tickets range from £5 - £8. See poster for more details.

Coffee Club
The last Coffee Club meeting for April is on 30th at 10.45 am.
During May they will meet on 14th and 28th.
All welcome.

Admission of Churchwardens
This year the service for the Admission of Churchwardens will take place on Monday 19th May at the Church of The Risen Christ (in Wyken Croft) at 7.30 pm. Not only will our own wardens be admitted to office but so will those from the rest of the deanery and from Coventry North. Our new Archdeacon, the Ven Ian Watson, will give his charge at the service and it provides an opportunity for those who have not met him yet to see him ‘in action’. Please do put the date in your diary and come along to support not only our wardens but those in others parts of the diocese. The warden’s task can often seem a thankless one and your support is much appreciated.

Christian Aid Week
Christian Aid Week will soon be upon us (11-17th May). This is the major fundraising effort for Christian Aid and relies upon ordinary people like you and me to go out collecting. In the past, we have not been overly good at this. 4 or 5 people have regularly collected for us here at St Mary’s. It would be encouraging if we could do a little more this year. To collect you are asked to deliver a red envelope either just before the week begins or during it. Then, a day later you call again to collect the envelope. Alternatively you could do it all in one. Many people are anxious about knocking on people’s doors and asking for money. Some people are a bit gruff, very occasionally you get someone who is quite rude but by far the majority are pleasant ordinary people who have the envelope ready. If you feel able to collect please take a bag of envelopes and sign the form against the road you will collect in. Once you have collected bring back the envelopes (unopened) and they will be collected from here.
