Newsletter - 4th March 2007

A warm welcome to you on this Second Sunday of Lent. Please do join us after the service to share in a cup of tea or coffee. All ages are welcome at St. Mary’s, children included. There is also a crèche in the Octagon for the very young if you need it. If this is your first time with us, please do fill in the slip at the end of the newsletter, so that we can keep in touch with you. St Mary’s is fitted with a hearing loop system. Members of the congregation who have a hearing aid with a ‘T’ switch will find that they can hear better when it is switched to ‘T’.

Coffee Club
In April they will meet on Wednesday 4th and 18th at 10.45 am. All Welcome. You may be interested to know that £100 has been donated to the Church Refurbishment fund from the Coffee Club. Gwen and Audrey

Annual Meeting
Our electoral roll is currently being updated. All regular worshippers at St Mary’s should sign an electoral roll form (available from Sheila Wick) this year as the roll is being completely revised. Membership entitles you to vote at our Annual General Meeting which takes place on March 25th when we shall be electing Church Wardens and our Parochial Church Council. The review closes today. Could you please also ensure that any outstanding reports are in the office by next Sunday.

Welcome Booklet
If you might be able to give a little time to help Jean and Derek Hudson put together a welcome pack for newcomers to St Mary’s, please speak to either of them as soon as possible.

Fund Raising Group
Last Thursdays meeting which had to be postponed has been rescheduled for this Thursday at 7.30 pm. Please see Jean Hudson for more details.

Bishops’ Visitation - Generosity of God
Please remember that this afternoon Bishops Colin and John will be speaking on the Generosity of God at Stoke St Michael’s beginning at 3.30 pm. Please do try to attend and stay for refreshments afterwards. The scheduled finishing time (with refreshments) is 5.30 pm.

Mission Group
In November 2006, Mission Group made recommendations to PCC for St Mary’s 2006 charitable giving; full details of this will be reported at the annual meeting on 25 March 2007. We also hope to provide more information about charitable giving at our “Worship for All” service on 4 March at 10am. In the meantime, please see the Mission notice board for thank-you letters, and related information, received from: Coventry Myton Hospice Appeal, Yeldall Manor, Headway Coventry and Warwickshire, USPG, Global Care - Child Sponsorship and Gilead Health Development Charity (also k/a Luweero). Lent Course
Last Wednesday 28th February we began our Lent Course. Two groups meet, one in the morning (10.30 - 12 noon) and the other in the evening (7.30 - 9 pm). The course ‘Life Attitudes’ looks at the beatitudes in Matthew’s gospel (Blessed are the poor in spirit etc). The morning session concludes with a soup and roll lunch. You are most welcome and either of the groups.

February Tote
1st Prize No. 8 T. Bennett £27.00
2nd Prize No. 26 Joyce Thompson £ 9.00

Your Church Needs You
You will be aware of the amount of repair needed to be done to the church fabric - peeling paint and degraded plaster bear witness. We can, however, keep the church as clean as possible and that is where you come in. Two volunteers are needed to fill a vacancy on the cleaning rota. The work involved takes less than an hour every seven weeks. If you are prepared to help please have a word with me.

The Second Sunday of Lent

Collect: Almighty God, by the prayer and discipline of Lent may we enter into the mystery of Christ’s sufferings, and by following in his Way come to share in his glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

First Reading: Genesis 15. 1-12, 17-18 [8 am only]

Second Reading: Philippians 3. 17—4.1 [8 am only]

Gospel Reading: Luke 13. 31-35 [8 am only]

Post Communion Prayer: Almighty God, you see that we have no power of ourselves to help ourselves: keep us both outwardly in our bodies, and inwardly in our souls; that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
