Newsletter - 6th August 2006

A warm welcome to you on this the Feast of the Transfiguration. Please do join us after the service to share in a cup of tea or coffee. All ages are welcome at St. Mary’s, children included. There is also a crèche in the Octagon for the very young if you need it. If this is your first time with us, please do fill in the slip at the end of the newsletter, so that we can keep in touch with you. St Mary’s is fitted with a hearing loop system. Members of the congregation who have a hearing aid with a ‘T’ switch will find that they can hear better when it is switched to ‘T’.

The flowers in the Lady Chapel today are in memory of Sylvia Bandy who died a year ago on Tuesday. Sylvia loved St Mary’s and its people and is greatly missed.

Parish Picnic
PCC set a date some weeks ago for a Parish Picnic at Coombe Abbey on 3rd September. We would like to gauge the interest in such a venture so please do fill in and return a questionnaire as soon as possible. Spare forms available today.
If enough people want to go to make the venture worthwhile we will go ahead; if the date is inconvenient it can be changed but if people are not interested we will review the idea.

Sunday Morning Drinks Rota
Would you please, if you are going on holiday or cannot be in church, either arrange a swop or ring more in good time so that I can arrange one. My phone number is on the rota. Many Thanks. Alan Robinson

New Cub Leader wanted
The Cubs need a new leader for a Monday night between 6.30 and 8.30 pm. If interested or need more information please contact Bill Hanna or Alison Liggins.

Fund Raising at St Mary’s
PCC had a good discussion about Fund Raising at its last meeting. Jean Hudson is willing to head a group of people who will look into possible fund raising events at St Mary’s. The aim of raising the funds will be for the refurbishment of the church itself.
If you are interested in helping on such a group please speak to Jean. There will be a meeting of the group on Tuesday 5 September. Please put the date in your diary now if you feel you can help in any way.

Coffee Club
The Coffee Club meets next on Wednesday 9th and 23rd August at 10.45 am. All welcome.
Gwen and Audrey

Red Lion Parking
I understand that several people have had difficulty parking in the Red Lion Car Park on a Sunday because the entrances were blocked . I have spoken to the duty manager who has explained the problems to me. Essentially the problem is on weekdays when people for the hospital park in the Red Lion Car Park. To deter this they are putting barriers in place each night. If you find such a barrier on a Sunday morning, the pub management are happy for you to park in the car park and ask only that you replace the barriers. We shall try to organise a laminated sticker for you to put in your windscreen over the next few weeks but as I say it is acceptable to park there on Sunday mornings.

The Transfiguration of our Lord

Collect: Father in heaven, whose Son Jesus Christ was wonderfully transfigured before chosen witnesses upon the holy mountain, and spoke of the exodus he would accomplish at Jerusalem: give us strength so to hear his voice and bear our cross that in the world to come we may see him as he is;
who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

First Reading: Daniel 7. 9-10, 13-14 Lois Whitehouse

Second Reading: 2 Peter 1. 16-19 Rebecca French

Gospel Reading: Luke 9. 28-36 David Greenhalgh

Intercessor: Lorraine Baker

Hymns: 242 82 195 311 280 321

Post Communion Prayer: Holy God, we see your glory in the face of Jesus Christ: may we who are partakers at his table reflect his life in word and deed,
that all the world may know his power to change and save. This we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord.
