Newsletter - 28th May 2006

A warm welcome to you on this Seventh Sunday of Easter. Please do join us after the service to share in a cup of tea or coffee. All ages are welcome at St. Mary’s, children included. There is also a crèche in the Octagon for the very young if you need it. If this is your first time with us, please do fill in the slip at the end of the newsletter, so that we can keep in touch with you. St Mary’s is fitted with a hearing loop system. Members of the congregation who have a hearing aid with a ‘T’ switch will find that they can hear better when it is switched to ‘T’.

Walk Wonders for Macmillan Cancer Relief
Today from between 10.00am and 4.00pm Elmhurst Organic Farm at Withybrook are hosting a walk around their award winning natural pasture land. It is an hour long walk packed with lots of interesting things to see and a map and guide will be provided. Children and dogs are welcome. Donations are being collected for the Macmillan Cancer Relief Fund and will help support local people living with cancer. If you would to do the walk, please see the poster in the foyer. I am going to do a 3 hour walk on the day and am looking for sponsorship for this excellent cause. If you feel that you would like to sponsor me, please sign the form next to the poster.

Possible Redundancies in Coventry Diocese
Several people were away last week so missed Bishop Colin’s letter which I have enclosed with this newsletter again. From it you you will see that seven people (5 full time equivalents) within the diocese are under threat of losing their jobs because the diocese can no longer be sure of paying its way. In large part this is because some parish either can’t or won’t pay their Parish Share. In this deanery each Parish met its Parish Share responsibility last year and we cannot be held accountable for any of the shortfall. However as you know we struggle here at St Mary’s and have only been kept afloat because of the generosity of many people (we were fortunate to receive around £45,000 in legacies last year). Very shortly you will be receiving a letter about our finances and I hope that you will be able to respond generously.

Sadly we know that Parish Share is likely to go up heavily again next year because of the extra Pension Contributions that will be required of the diocese. This is part of a larger debate and is attributable to Government legislation which requires Pension providers to be less optimistic about the ability of their funds to pay the necessary pensions.

Red Lion Parking
I understand that several people had some difficulty parking in the Red Lion Car Park last Sunday because the entrances were blocked . I have spoken to the duty manager this week who has explained the problems to me. Essentially the problem is on weekdays when people for the hospital park in the Red Lion Car Park. To deter this they are putting barriers in place each night. If you find such a barrier on a Sunday morning, the pub management are happy for you to park in the car park and ask only that you replace the barriers. We shall try to organise a laminated sticker for you to put in your windscreen over the next few weeks but as I say it is acceptable to park there on Sunday mornings.
