Newsletter - 25th Sept 2005

A warm welcome to you on this the Eighteenth Sunday after Trinity. Please do join us after the service to share in a cup of tea or coffee. All ages are welcome at St. Mary’s, children included. There is also a crèche in the office for the very young if you need it. If this is your first time with us, please do fill in the slip at the end of the newsletter, so that we can keep in touch with you. St Mary’s is fitted with a hearing loop system. Members of the congregation who have a hearing aid with a ‘T’ switch will find that they can hear better when it is switched to ‘T’.

Feed The Minds Harvest
Alongside our traditional Harvest Thanksgiving on Sunday October 2nd, we are refocusing on Jesus' broader use of the term “harvest”. In Africa for example, many people do not have sufficient knowledge and education because they have very few books. In the UK, we have plenty of books and we take education for granted. So we aim to make a gift of books through the SPCK FEED THE MINDS campaign - a campaign that funds church-based programmes. To make this gift possible, could you host a Harvest Meal any lunchtime, tea-time or evening between Sunday September 25th and Sunday October 9th? You would provide the meal and your guests might consider how much they usually spend on a meal out, and then pay the amount they’ve chosen. If a meal is a bit much you could invite some friends around for coffee or tea and make some special cakes or biscuits as an alternative. All the monies raised by the Harvest Meal hosts will make the total gift towards the purchase of books. We hope to raise at least £100 in this way. Please put your name on the list in the foyer to indicate your willingness to take part.

Coffee Club
Coffee Club dates from September to Christmas are as follows:- October 5th and 19th, November 2nd, 16th and 30th and December 14th. All on Wednesday mornings at 10.45 am. All are welcome.

Salvation Army band Concert
Thank you to all who supported the concert held in Church on Saturday 10th September. With the proceeds from the ticket sales, refreshment donations, the raffle and a donation, I am pleased to advise you that £600 was raised, which will be shared equally between St Mary’s Refurbishment Fund and the Salvation Army Rebuilding Fund

St. Mary’s questionnaire
Please remember to bring back your own questionnaire on life at St. Mary’s.
The last day for receipt is today.

Harvest Again
Please remember that we are celebrating Harvest on October 2nd (next week). We shall be collecting tinned produce again to distribute between the Salvation Army hostel and the Emmaus project (at Binley Vicarage). As ever we hope that you will check the ‘best before dates’ of all tins you bring in and although we do ask for tins we can cope with some fresh produce to distribute locally. Please remember though that large marrows or pumpkins are very difficult to find a home for. You might be very appreciative of a large marrow at the age of 84, but on the other hand you might not be!

Christmas Fayre
This year’s Fayre will be held on Saturday 26th November from 11am to 3pm. The organising group (Barbara Hancox, Sheila Thistlewood, Alison Liggins, Ann Rushworth and Jean Hudson) will hold their initial meeting on 29th September after which more information will be available. If you feel you could run a stall please speak to Barbara or Alison.
