Newsletter - 4th Sept 2005

A warm welcome to you on this Fifteenth Sunday after Trinity. Please do join us after the service to share in a cup of tea or coffee. All ages are welcome at St. Mary’s, children included. There is also a crèche in the office for the very young if you need it. If this is your first time with us, please do fill in the slip at the end of the newsletter, so that we can keep in touch with you. St Mary’s is fitted with a hearing loop system. Members of the congregation who have a hearing aid with a ‘T’ switch will find that they can hear better when it is switched to ‘T’.

Feed The Minds Harvest
Alongside our traditional Harvest Thanksgiving on Sunday October 2nd, we are refocusing on Jesus' broader use of the term “harvest”. In Africa for example, many people do not have sufficient knowledge and education because they have very few books. In the UK, we have plenty of books and we take education for granted. So we aim to make a gift of books through the SPCK FEED THE MINDS campaign - a campaign that funds church-based programmes. To make this gift possible, could you host a Harvest Meal any lunchtime, tea-time or evening between Sunday September 25th and Sunday October 9th? You would provide the meal and your guests might consider how much they usually spend on a meal out, and then pay the amount they’ve chosen. If a meal is a bit much you could invite some friends around for coffee or tea and make some special cakes or biscuits as an alternative. All the monies raised by the Harvest Meal hosts will make the total gift towards the purchase of books. We hope to raise at least £100 in this way. Please put your name on the list in the foyer to indicate your willingness to take part.

Sponsored Cycle Ride or Walk
As usual at this time of year, there is an opportunity to support the Historic Churches Trust and raise funds for St Mary’s by being sponsored to visit local churches. The event is on Saturday, September 10th.
If you would like further information, sponsor forms, etc., please see Tony Thistlewood.

Thankyou’s
Following Sylvia’s death, Edna and I would like to offer our sincere thanks for your love and support during what was for us, and I am sure for many of you, a very difficult time. Our particular thanks go to Malcolm and Frances for the practical help they gave us in dealing with all those things which have to be done immediately following a death and for organising the funeral. Alan Robinson

I would like to thank everyone at St Mary’s for their visits, get well cards and prayers during my recent stay in Hospital. I seem to have recovered quite well from the operation and am making slow but steady progress. Reg Amos

A big thankyou for the prayers and kind wishes on my heart surgery. I am told the operation on my heart was a success. I am sure the prayers and good wishes played a big part. The doctors and staff tell me I am doing well. Now it is up to me to rest and do as I am told (difficult). May Wooff

Concert by the The Salvation Army Band - Saturday 10th September
