Newsletter - 3rd July 2005

A warm welcome to you on this Sixth Sunday after Trinity when we remember St Thomas the Apostle. Please do join us after the service to share in a cup of tea or coffee. All ages are welcome at St. Mary’s, children included. There is also a crèche in the office for the very young if you need it. If this is your first time with us, please do fill in the slip at the end of the newsletter, so that we can keep in touch with you. St Mary’s is fitted with a hearing loop system. Members of the congregation who have a hearing aid with a ‘T’ switch will find that they can hear better when it is switched to ‘T’.

Church Cleaning
We have a new vacuum cleaner, donated by the coffee club, which is kept in the organ loft. Will members of the cleaning team please, if possible, vacuum the organ loft as well as the church. Thank you. Alan Robinson

Envelopes, Gift Aid and Standing Orders
St Mary’s relies upon regular financial giving to keep afloat. There are various ways in which you can plan your giving to St Mary’s. The easiest way is by Standing Order direct from your bank to ours. Alternatively we can provide you with envelopes (one for each week of the year) which encourages you to give each week. If you are not here one week you save up the envelope until the next time you come. If you are not in either of these schemes please have a word with Jean Hudson, our planned giving officer who will be happy to give you more details. Finally, if you pay income tax, for one signature on a piece of paper we can reclaim the tax you have already paid on your gift. So for every £5 we can reclaim from the tax man another £1.40. Again speak to Jean if you would like to know more.

St. Philips, Potters Green are holding a musical evening “Melodies For Summer” on Thursday 14th July at 7.30 pm. This is being presented by the Bedworth Choral Society. Tickets cost £5. Concessions £4. Tickets available from 7637 4152 or on the door. Please see poster for more details.

Christian Aid
The total raised by the Christian Aid collection at St Mary’s is £592.74. Thank you to all those whose generosity helped make this total and a big thank you to those who gave their time to collect. Last year the total was just £435.00 - so this year is an enormous improvement. Your support will improve life for people in more than 50 of the world’s poorest countries. In Peru, installing a clean, safe water supply has transformed life in the village of Yanacullo. Lawrence

Summer Holiday Period
Although we are coming up to the Summer holiday period, there are still one or two things happening in the diocese before the great departure! Please look on the noticeboards for courses on offer and or flower festivals taking place over the next few weeks (or even into the autumn.)

Confirmation Classes (adults and children)
I am looking to running separate classes for adults and children wanting to be confirmed. The confirmation will be at the Cathedral in November but I would like to assess now how many candidates we are likely to be taking. Please have a word with me as soon as possible if you would like to be confirmed. (or even if you are unsure about what this means).

St. Thomas the Apostle

Collect: Almighty and eternal God, who, for the firmer foundation of our faith, allowed your holy apostle Thomas to doubt the resurrection of your Son
till word and sight convinced him: grant to us, who have not seen, that we also may believe and so confess Christ as our Lord and our God; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

First Reading Habakkuk 2. 1-4 [8 am only]

Second Reading: Ephesians 2. 19-22 [8 am only]

Gospel Reading: John 20. 24-29 [8 am only]

Post Communion Prayer Almighty God, who on the day of Pentecost
sent your Holy Spirit to the apostles with the wind from heaven and in tongues of flame, filling them with joy and boldness to preach the gospel:
by the power of the same Spirit strengthen us to witness to your truth
and to draw everyone to the fire of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
