PLASMA

Church Attendance

The electoral roll was revised during February and March. Numbers reported to the APCM in March were 122, of whom 50 are not resident within the Parish boundaries.

The average Sunday adult attendance counted between February and April was 72. The average attendance of those under 18 counted over the same period was 20. Over the same period the average adult attendance on Wednesday morning was 14.

Review of the year

The full PCC met 9 times during the year with an average level of attendance of 66%.

Finance has continued to be a worry for PCC this year as it has been for several years. We held a Stewardship campaign in June which together with increased rental income from our buildings enabled us to make a modest surplus over the year. The results of the campaign were however disappointing in that although several new members were recruited to our giving schemes and others increased their giving, the gains were almost entirely wiped out by others who had either died or left the congregation. PCC acknowledge that ongoing work will be needed this year to monitor our financial position.

PCC have continued to receive reports on the potential Church Hall development. Although no firm plans are to hand the proposal before the Council is to offer a lease to a developer to rebuild the Church Hall facility incorporating some rental property. Whether this can be financed is yet to be decided.

During the year PCC were asked by the Bishop of Warwick to consider welcoming a newly ordained deacon to the staff in July 2009. After initial discussions with Malcolm and the wardens it was agreed that Stella Bailey should serve her title at St Mary’s from July 2009. PCC will be responsible for her parochial expenses but the diocese will finance her housing costs. It is hoped that a house will be purchased soon after Easter for Stella to live in during her time at St Mary’s.

During the year Mervyn and Malcolm attended a deanery meeting to decide upon the levels of Parish Share each Parish should be expected to pay in 2009.

In February we said farewell to Hilary Iredale who had been on placement at St Mary’s for four months. Hilary, from St Matthew’s Rugby, was an ordinand and will be ordained this summer along with Stella.

Sadly our regular organist, Reg Amos, became ill towards the end of the year and had to go into hospital. PCC is very grateful to Margaret Davoll who played in his place initially and to Colin Gardner who has agreed to play in Reg’s absence in the meantime. Although now out of hospital and recovering well, Reg has been unable to come to St Mary’s since his spell in hospital.

Special events during the year included the Wedding Preparation Day in February (for those preparing to be married at St Mary’s), and the Bereavement Service in November. Both were well attended. It was however a particular joy to celebrate a marriage in the context of our weekly Sunday service in February. Blaise Ndikumana married Noella Mulonda in a splendid service notable not least for Noella’s outfit but also for the shoes of one of the wedding guests! The Christmas Fayre in November was well patronised and raised over £2,700 towards the redecoration of the church itself. Harvest gifts were donated to the Coventry Peace House and Open Hands whilst toys from the Toy Service in December were donated to the Salvation Army. During Lent two groups met on Wednesday (one in the morning and one in the evening) to discuss a Lent book based on the film Chocolat.

Coventry City Salvation Army Band again held a concert in September which raised a significant amount for both the Church and the Salvation Army. PCC’s thanks again go to Gary Croshaw and his team for organising this. In the summer Owen Vigeon also organised a concert The Last Rose of Summer which was also well received.

This year we have had several quiz evenings hosted by Val Ekin. These have been much enjoyed by those who have taken part. Val is keen to host more evenings in 2009.

In December Mel Smith and others cooked Christmas Lunch for about 40 people after Church one Sunday. This was much appreciated by those who came and it is likely that similar events will be held in 2009.

Money collected through the Annual Christmas Card was donated to the Baptist’s Church Christmas Lunch.

During the year the following number of occasional offices were conducted at St Mary’s

Weddings (including 1 Blessing of Marriage) 16
Funerals in Church 24
Funerals at the Crematorium 9
Burials of cremated remains 4
Baptisms 44

Members of the congregation and ordained staff have continued to take Holy Communion to members of the Parish at home during the year but it was sad that the Beavers were unable to sing Carols at St Martin’s Nursing Home because of the sickness in the home on the night they were to sing..

Classes have visited the Church from Walsgrave Primary School, and Sir Frank Whittle School. Services have been held at Christmas, Harvest and Easter for Walsgrave School. Alison Liggins, Gill Tompsett, Malcolm Tyler and Lorraine Baker have continued to represent the Church as Foundation Governors at Walsgrave School. Malcolm regularly leads collective worship in school assemblies at Walsgrave School and was asked during the year to lead the Harvest assembly at Pearl Hyde School.

Fabric of the church

Report on the Goods,Fabric and Ornaments of St Mary's 2008

It is good to report again that the Church and Hall suffered very little at the hands of the vandals in 2008.

Routine maintenance has been carried out at the Church and Centre throughout the year. The organ has been tuned and maintained (£180), the fire extinguishers (£65) and burglar alarm (£328) serviced. Ad hoc repairs have been carried out as necessary by various members of the congregation for which PCC is grateful. Sadly the Tower clock was removed for maintenance in the Autumn and found to be in a sad state of repair. An estimate of £2,000 for its repair has been obtained and PCC are looking into the possibility of raising this money from a grant. The church centre boiler needed some maintenance in November and it is likely that a thorough servicing of the boiler will be needed in the Spring of 2009. The Church boiler also needed a replacement gas valve after an initial callout had failed to solve an intermittent problem. The total cost of this work was £344. Drains at the Church became severely blocked in September and had to be power jetted. Despite several calls to the company the bill for this work has never been received; the majority will be claimed under insurance however.

The churchyard was regularly tidied by a group of Social Services trainees (at a total cost of £313 for the year) and other maintenance work was carried out by Coventry City Council.

The area of land adjacent to the Church Hall was maintained by Derek Hudson and Malcolm Tyler this year and PCC is grateful for their hard work during the Spring, Summer and Autumn. Two windows were broken during the year but replaced under the Hall Insurance policy (£382). The urinal drain also had to be unblocked at a total cost of £268. The Hall was also cleaned regularly for free by a member of the congregation for which PCC is extremely grateful.

Coventry East Deanery

Coventry East Deanery Synod Report

The Deanery Synod met on four occasions in 2008, twice at St Mary’s, once at St Chad’s and once at St Nicholas in Kenilworth for a joint meeting with Coventry South, Coventry North and Kenilworth deaneries.

In February we met for the first time at St Mary’s to hear our new Archdeacon, Ian Watson, speak about his role within the diocese. In particular Ian spoke of his vision for the Cathedral and Holy Trinity to serve the city of Coventry as a whole.

In May the focus of our meeting at St Chad’s was the Bishop’s Certificate in Discipleship – a course to be offered throughout the diocese starting formally in September 2008. Naomi Nixon gave a presentation on the structure of the Certificate and how deaneries may become involved. Partly as a result of this one module of the Certificate is currently being held at St Mary’s at which several members of are present.

In June we met again to hear a presentation from Dr Christina Baxter about the issues facing the Church of England at the moment. Dr Baxter is a senior lay member of the General Synod and gave a cogent analysis to the four deaneries of the issues currently before Synod, including women and the episcopate as well as the tensions between fresh expressions of Church and traditional patterns of ministry.

In November we met again at St Mary’s to hear the Revd Paul Simmonds speak about his role with the organisation Workcare. Paul encouraged us to think more carefully about the place of work within Christian worship and not to undervalue the worth of a Christian presence in te secular workplace.

The deanery also facilitated a meeting of Incumbents and Treasurer’s to settle the deaneries Parish Share for 2009.

Churchwarden

Churchwardens’ Report

Thank you to all the members of our congregation who are on the various rotas and carry out the many and varied tasks necessary to ensure that the church functions efficiently. These thanks also extend to those who have carried out the assorted repairs and maintenance required at the Church and the Church Hall.

About eighteen months ago our church centre cleaner went to university and since then Malcolm and the Butterflies leaders have been carrying out the cleaning. PCC have now put these duties as a further rota which is being carried out by some members of PCC and the congregation.

Since the autumn, Reg Amos our organist has unfortunately suffered ill health and has been unable to play. We are very grateful to Colin Garner who kindly agreed to step in and play for us, which is greatly appreciated and we are also pleased to welcome his wife Barbara, who now also worships with us.

As in previous years, we would like to say how fortunate we are in having Malcolm, Tony, Sue and Lorraine to lead us with their various styles, not forgetting Owen our retired multi-talented vicar.

We have been fortunate enough to have enjoyed a variety of successful social and fundraising events including quiz nights, concerts, the Christmas Fayre and an excellent Christmas dinner cooked by members of the congregation. Thanks go to all who have been involved organising them.

Treasurer

Treasurer’s Report

The media every day seems to be full of doom and gloom about the international banking and credit crisis and whilst there are some positive things to report, St Mary’s also continues to struggle financially.

On the positive side the stewardship campaign achieved some success with an overall three and a half percent rise in giving which coupled with an unpredicted rise in letting income from the church centre and church hall helped to make our end of year position a more encouraging one. Balanced against this was the loss of some standing order payments resulting from people leaving the congregation and the negative effect of inflation on all our bills.

It would be remiss of me however, not to acknowledge the generosity of many people both in their regular giving and donations to the church and the contributions to the Refurbishment Fund received as donations and as funds raised as a result of organised events.

Worship Group and Music

During the year the worship group has met regularly to choose the hymns for our morning worship at 10am on Sundays. Using the Royal School of Church Music’s suggestions we have found this a happy task even if we are conscious that it is almost impossible to satisfy everyone! Sadly during the year Reg Amos became ill and his place amongst the group has been missed. Fortunately we have now gained the help of Colin Gardner, who is playing the organ in Reg’s stead to help us in our choices. I find it difficult to comment in Reg’s absence about the standard of singing at St Mary’s, not being a trained musician myself! However it seems to me that we make a merry noise more often than not, for which I hope God is pleased. I do notice occasionally though that as a congregation we are prone to dragging slightly. All power to Colin for not letting us get away with it!

Readers and Intercessors Rota

My thanks to all our readers and intercessors for their help and assistance during the year.

Presently we have 30 readers, 11 of whom also lead prayers. Unfortunately, we have 5 less people that we had in 2006 which has meant that some of the readers have had two readings instead of one as previously.

If you would like to take part in the Sunday morning service by reading and/or leading prayers, please have a word with Malcolm, Barbara, John or Jean and we will be delighted to give you more details and help wherever we can

Sacristans

Sally Vigeon, Betty Dakin and I form the Sacristan team at St Mary’s. We ensure that all the things needed for the Communion services are ready.

We prepare the vessels and launder the linen as required. The silver is polished before major festivals. The team also has the job of preparing the hymn-boards.

I normally prepare the vessels for the Wednesday service and if unavailable Sally covers for me. Preparation for Sunday is carried out after the Wednesday service.

Church Cleaning

I would like to thank all the members of the team for their efforts in keeping St Mary’s looking so clean and well cared for. We have had one or two people leave the rota this year and are looking for more volunteers. If you can help please let me know.

My special thanks go to Alan Robinson and Gill Giles who continue to clean the brass so well.

Lazers

Lazer members vary from week to week. I am very impressed by the honesty the young adults show. We have recently been looking at Lent and they were asked to produce a booklet of things they could give up each day for the Lent period or something they could do. They told me things they would find hard to give up like face book, texts and e-mails [on their phones and computers] but were willing to give them up for a day. For young adults they were very honest and I could understand how hard it would be for them to stop even for one day but they have so far done this. St Mary’s should be proud of their teenagers.

I have found that they love to discuss and banter with one another about different subjects within the bible but they are even better at this when they have a pencil in their hand and a piece of paper to doodle on.

It is good that sometimes Stephen passes by and will add to the conversations and get them thinking about something different.

Beavers

Beavers are the starting area for children in the scouting movement. They join when they are usually six years of age and move to cubs when they are eight.

We do many things in beavers, from making things, attending Christmas parties, carol services, visits, badge work and many other things.

Sadly due to risk assessment we are no longer allowed to visit a lot of places. This is not because we can’t do risk assessment but the places we visit have not got the time to do them or don’t want to risk it. If you know of somewhere we could visit which the children will enjoy then please have a word with me.

We have approximately 14 beavers at the moment as we have sent a lot up. In the beavers we now have the change to earn more badges that we were able to. We are hoping to do a camp sometime this year.

At Christmas we went to the elderly residence to do our normal carol singing and give gifts only to find when we rang the doorbell we could not go in as they were all ill. I would like to thank Stephen who had been good enough to turn up at short notice and Margaret who keeps December clear in her diary!

We will be making Mothering Sunday cards and gifts and Easter cards and gifts all towards the creative challenge.

In April we will be attending the St George’s day parade in the town. We held a parents evening which is always good fun for the beavers and parents alike.

We had a visit from Coventry air ambulance lady who told the children about what they do and also some of the scenes they had attended. One description was of a motor cyclist who had crashed. She explained in child friendly terms some of the wounds he had received from broken rib and legs, but got the biggest aghast from them when she said at the end he had cut his finger as well!

I would also like to thank Gaynor and Samuel who help every week. Within the scouting movement we are always looking for help or even people who would like to offer something to the children. If you have a skill or would like to help on one of the nights please speak with any of the leaders.

Cubs

34th Coventry Cubs

It has been a very busy year again with around 17 children attending regularly and a new parent helper. The children are working hard to gain their badges. Currently we are doing first aid towards their Community Challenge and we cleaned the inside of the Church Hall windows as part of their Home Help badge.

We have again been active in district events and competitions for the Cubs, taking part in CUSO, the sponsored walk, the Road Safety Quiz, chess day, swimming gala, sports day, St Georges Day, the district water weekend camp and Church Parade whenever possible. For the 1st time ever all 10 of the Cubs who took part in the swimming gala gained a certificate for 1st, 2nd or 3rd place. We also came 3rd overall.

We raised £149 last year for the charity Children with Leukaemia with our sponsored pancake marathon. All the cubs cooked and ate pancakes and were sponsored to toss them 26 times. In March we are having a paper plane challenge night to raise funds for them again.

We ran a shared camp with the Scouts last May which all the children thoroughly enjoyed. They got the opportunity to build and cook over a camp fire and set and follow tracks. They had a go at archery and crate climbing. Crate climbing is when you stack 2 piles of crates and stand on them. They keep passing you more crates to stack and climb on until they either can’t reach to pass you any more or you fall off (whilst safely harnessed of course). Some of us were so nervous but we all had a go and were proud of ourselves for our achievements. Even us leaders had a go!

We are planning another joint camp in September at Rough Close and are aiming to see how far our home-made rockets can go at the district camp which is held at Bosworth Water Park. The children take part in land and water based activities. They have a go on kayaks, canoes & rowing boats. On land they get to make various things and last year we made about 130 rain makers.

Our aim is still to teach the children various skills whilst having fun whatever their abilities. We feel proud to watch them develop over their time with us and go on through scouts and life with confidence and an expanding knowledge.

We are once again collecting Sainsburys and Tescos vouchers and hope this year to be able to purchase a uni-hoc set for all the sections to enjoy.

Scout Troop Report

34th Coventry Scout Troop Report

The Scout troop has been very active over the last 12 months and again been successful in all the competitions we have taken part in. We have also continued with our badge work which gives the Scouts a variety of things to try for the first time or improve on. These have included looking at Fair Trade, taking part in expeditions, fitness challenge, camping and canoeing. 3 Scouts achieved their Gold Chief Scout Award, which is the highest award possible in the Scout section, and we are expecting at least 1 more Scout to achieve this award in the next few months.

The Troop has changed, age wise, over the past year. We have had to say good bye to 3 Scouts due to age and hello to several Cubs that have linked with the Scout section. This means that Colin and I are now working with a younger Scout Troop. Hopefully, over the next 3 or 4 years, these new Scouts will achieve and enjoy themselves as much as the ones that have had to leave.

In April we took part in SMIJ, which is a District competition. This involves the Scouts going on a 6 mile hike in teams and completing 2 or 3 incidents along the route. The 34th put out 2 teams who came third and first. This is the Third year running we have won this competition.

In June we took part in the Annual District Raft race. It was an extremely windy day at Bosworth Water Trust Park, with some Rafts not moving away from the bank. The 34th team struggled hard and once again came in as winners.

In October we took part in the District Uni-hock competition and were winners again.

We have just taken part in the District orienteering competition at Rough Close. All the Scouts that took part tried hard and seemed to enjoy this new competition.

Colin and I will continue to try and offer a fun and varied programme that the Scouts can enjoy and learn new skills from. We are always looking for new ideas and help so please contact us if you think you may be able to help in any way.

St Mary’s serves drinks in the University Hospital on a Saturday evening, which usually takes around an hour and is much appreciated by both staff and patients.
Unfortunately our numbers have depleted over the years and we are now only able to cover one Ward. If you feel this is something you could commit yourself to every 5 weeks (at the moment) I would be most grateful if you would have a word with me. Car Parking can be reimbursed.

PLASMA (Prayer Life at St Mary’s)

PLASMA group exists mainly to support the prayer ministry of our intercessors, readers and those who pray with the yellow prayer cards after our 10am Sunday service. The Prayer Book on the Lady Chapel altar is well used but the Prayer Tree in the foyer could be used more. Perhaps that’s because it is hard to accept the emphasis in prayer on the will, the desire of God; not on the will or desire of the one making the intercession. However we believe it is a deep Christian instinct to bring all concerns to a loving Father.

In the past year, March 2008 to February 2009, 20 wedding couples have been prayed for; 36 bereaved families, 44 baptisms; and 21 other occasions (e.g. illness, exams) have featured in the prayers of our Family of Prayer members.

The group has begun to plan for a mission to the parish in 2010. It is 24 years since the last one lead by the Franciscans. Its aim will be to deepen faith and commitment in the parish.

A more imminent event is the next Quiet Day to be held at St John’s, Wolvey on Saturday June 6th.

BRF Report

I am currently St Mary’s representative for The Bible Reading Fellowship (BRF).

BRF produce books three times a year on two levels, firstly New Daylight which gives a good starting point by providing daily readings from the Bible and secondly Guidelines which is more advanced with in-depth study and commentary of themes alongside its daily readings. We currently have 10 people who receive copies of either New Daylight or Guidelines. The cost is currently just under £11 a year.

I am always willing to chat to anyone who is interested in learning a little bit more, and can provide examples for you to try.

Thanks to all these people plus Malcolm Tyler and Jean Hudson who are essential to running Butterflies.

Our waiting list is now down to five and we look forward to another good year.

Junior Church

Junior church this year continues to go from strength to strength. We have a good core of enthusiastic and dedicated leaders, and a growing number of children who are involved. Numbers attending each week tend to fluctuate wildly - anything from four to fourteen children - depending upon when their parents and carers are attending the service. The children are of very varied ages and degrees of familiarity with the Christian faith, but all bring a good level of interest and creativity, and they respond well to the materials they are presented with. This year we have been using the 'Searchlight' materials, which tie into the lectionary used in the service, and ensure that the children's instruction follows the theme of the main worship.

Flowers

I feel particularly privileged to belong to this team. Arranging flowers in our church is such a lovely thing to do. The opportunity to do something this special for whatever the occasion is very enjoyable and rewarding.

Flowers also greet our visitors and provide a friendly atmosphere at St Mary’s. Though none of us are experienced flower arrangers the team and I do our very best to ensure that the displays are always pleasing to the eye.

Those who are going through a time of great stress can look at flowers in church and momentarily take their minds away from their deep sorrow, but that short while is all it takes to encompass the beauty of a simple flower, while they teach lessons of peace, contentment and humility to us all.

Servers

I’m very pleased to report that during the last 12 months the servers’ team has grown in abundance and furthermore that we now have as many adults as we do children. Team members are: John Aspden, Keith Lashley, Carole Osselton, Hannah Tyler, Kerry Tutchings, Christopher Osselton, Thomas and Samuel Liggins, John Madgwick, Yu Hang Xei and last but not least my good self.

Of Course having a strong team does not mean that I have stopped recruiting – far from it. There is always room for more, so if you are 10 years of age or older and would like to join our team, please come and speak to me on any Sunday morning after the service.

Sadly the latter part of 2008 was tinged with sadness after we lost our longest service member, Leo Spooner who passed away last November. Leo was a dedicated server for many many years and is sadly missed.
