Church Attendance

The electoral roll was revised during February and March. Numbers reported to the APCM in March were 122, of whom 44 are not resident within the Parish boundaries.

The average Sunday adult attendance counted between February and April was 72. The average attendance of those under 18 counted over the same period was 13. Over the same period the average adult attendance on Wednesday morning was 14.

Review of the year

The full PCC met 9 times during the year with an average level of attendance of 70%.

Perhaps the most interesting meeting that PCC had this year was with the then Archdeacon of Coventry, Mark Bryant, now Bishop of Jarrow. Mark encouraged PCC to think about things that were done well at St Mary’s and towards the end about things that were a worry. We felt that as a church we did welcome people well and were generally encouraging. Mark suggested one or two strategies (such as the sending of cards at wedding anniversaries or anniversaries of death) to further this work and hoped we would develop this welcoming ministry more generally.

Finance has been a considerable worry to PCC this year as it has been for several years. We tried to encourage a greater generosity through a general letter to the congregation but sadly this had very little real effect on the levels of giving. PCC acknowledge that some further effort will be needed this year to help improve our financial position. PCC did however debate the issue of charitable giving at some length following the discussion at last year’s APCM. Despite the financial difficulties of such a decision, PCC decided that charitable giving was a high priority within the annual budget and agreed to give away the budgeted figure for 2007. It was also agreed that charitable giving be decided upon earlier in the PCC financial year and that other ways of giving to charity be looked at for the future.

PCC have received several reports on a potential Church Hall development. A small working group was set up consisting of PCC members and others from the local community to look at the potential for developing the Church Hall site. An offer from a developer to buy the Church Hall was rejected after advice from the Diocesan Solicitor. Essentially PCC is unable to convert a capital asset such as the Hall into a liquid one without permission from the Charity Commissioners. PCC feel that though the Church Hall is far from wonderful it is one of the few community buildings in Walsgrave and members wish to maintain the facility. Since then efforts to improve the facilities have been investigated but little is currently forthcoming. Financing such a project would be a considerable undertaking and funding is very scarce at the moment.

PCC appointed Richard Wood as architect during the year. Our previous architect was no longer on the list of architects qualified to undertake Church work so the new appointment was necessary. Richard is currently preparing faculties for some outstanding work on the tower and roofing and will then proceed with work to do with the interior re-plastering.

Having advertised for a new Verger in 2007, PCC appointed Barry Walker to the post in January 2008. Leo Spooner, our long standing Verger had resigned the position because of poor health and Sheila Thistlewood also stood down shortly afterwards. Our thanks go to Leo, Sheila, and also to Mike Wakeman who stood in for Leo as Verger on several occasions.

During the year Mervyn and Malcolm attended a deanery meeting to decide upon the levels of Parish Share each Parish should be expected to pay in 2008.

PCC again were grateful that the issue of vandalism which had taken up so much of its time in previous years seemed to be a thing of the past.

With some sadness we bade farewell to Pennie Hartopp and her husband John in September. Pennie had served as Curate at St Mary’s since January 2006 and she and John had become part of the fabric of St Mary’s. We miss their input but continue to wish them well in Pennie’s appointment as Team Vicar at St Mark’s Godalming.

Following Pennie’s departure we welcomed Hilary Iredale to St Mary’s for four months. Hilary, from St Matthew’s Rugby, was an ordinand on placement. Like Pennie, Hilary soon established herself at St Mary’s and we shall miss her too. Her contributions to our worship and activities were much valued.

In particular Hilary was able to contribute to the Emmaus Course which ran in the autumn of 2007 and the early months of 2008. Although the participants were few in number, the course was appreciated by those who were able to attend.

Special events during the year included the Wedding Preparation Day in February (for those preparing to be married at St Mary’s), a Quiet Day in June (led by Sue Morton and Tony Thistlewood), and the Bereavement Service in November. All were well attended. The Christmas Fayre in November was well patronised and raised over £1,200 towards the redecoration of the church itself. Harvest gifts were donated to the Coventry Cyrenians and Norton House whilst toys from the Toy Service in December were donated to the Coventry Haven. During Lent two groups met on Wednesday (one in the morning and one in the evening) to discuss the Lent book Life Attitudes. This course was more difficult than the previous one, entitled Life Balance, but was valued by participants. It has been decided to follow the Lent course based on the film Chocolat for 2008.

There were two concerts held during the year at Church, one organised by Gary Croshaw featuring the Coventry City Salvation Army Band in September and one in April by the Lachrymae Ensemble who played lute music by John Dowling. Both were well attended and raised considerable sums of money for the Church.

Money collected through the Annual Christmas Card was donated to the Children’s Society.

During the year the following number of occasional offices were conducted at St Mary’s

Weddings (including 2 blessings of marriage) 15
Funerals in Church 20
Funerals at the Crematorium 12
Burials of cremated remains 2
Baptisms 31

It was also pleasing to admit five children to Communion on Easter Day following preparation undertaken jointly by Malcolm Tyler and Pennie Hartopp.

Members of the congregation and ordained staff have continued to take Holy Communion to members of the Parish at home during the year and it was particularly pleasing that the Beavers were able to sing Carols at St Martin’s Nursing Home again.

In December the Stoke District Scouting Carol Service was held at St Mary’s. Church was full to bursting and it was fitting that the collection at this service was donated to Send-a-Cow, the charity supported by the family of Bill Hanna, a former Scout leader who had died earlier in the year.

Classes have visited the Church from Walsgrave Primary School, and Sir Frank Whittle School. Services have been held at Christmas, Harvest and Easter for Walsgrave School. A leaver’s service was also held for the Year 6 children in July. Alison Liggins, Malcolm Tyler and Lorraine Baker have continued to represent the Church as Foundation Governors at Walsgrave School. Gill Giles decided to stand down as a Governor at the end of her term of office in August and has been replaced by Gillian Tompsett. Malcolm regularly leads collective worship in school assemblies at Walsgrave School and was asked during the year to lead the Harvest assembly at Pearl Hyde School.

It is likely that this year PCC will need to continue to work on the refurbishment of the building as well as on the levels of giving.

Fabric of the church

Report on the Goods,Fabric and Ornaments of St Mary's 2007

As last year, PCC have asked that costs for work mentioned be included so that a greater appreciation of the maintenance costs at St Mary’s may be had by members of the congregation.

It is wonderful to report that the Church and Hall suffered very little at the hands of the vandals in 2007; there was only one major incident at Church in which the leaded lights of some of the church windows were damaged. Although this led to a costly repair (£840) the majority of the cost (£790) was reclaimed on insurance. A small amount of lead flashing at the Church was also repaired under insurance.

Routine maintenance including some minor work required by the Quinquennial Inspection has been carried out at the Church and Centre throughout the year. The organ has been tuned and maintained (£175), the fire extinguishers (£47), burglar alarm (£328), and tower clock serviced (£203). Ad hoc repairs have been carried out as necessary by various members of the congregation for which PCC is grateful. The radiators were serviced free of charge by John Hartopp.

A stair gate was also purchased for use by the crèche on Sunday mornings and a parachute for junior church (total cost £30).

PCC appointed a new architect (Richard Wood of DEK Architects) during the year as the previous architect was removed from the approved list. Richard sits on the Diocesan Advisory Committee and is currently working on outstanding issues from our Quinqennial report (the re-pointing of the Tower and the installation of emergency lighting.) Work on the re-plastering of Church has been held up at his suggestion until the heating issues in Church are resolved.

The churchyard was regularly tidied by a group of Community Services trainees (at a total cost of £366 for the year) and other maintenance work was carried out by Coventry City Council.

The area of land adjacent to the Church Hall was maintained by Derek Hudson this year and PCC is grateful for his hard work during the Spring, Summer and Autumn. The only damage at the Church Hall during the year was to the front doors. These were replaced under insurance.

Coventry East Deanery

Coventry East Deanery Synod Report

The Synod met on three occasions during the year, once here at St Mary’s when I was licensed as Area Dean with Charlotte Gale also being licensed as Assistant Area Dean. The main speaker was John Hall, the Director of Social Responsibility in the diocese who spoke about his work generally.

Our second meeting in October was at St Philip’s when we had an engaging speaker from Christian Aid. This was an extremely enjoyable evening not least for an exercise we were encouraged to do in that we were encouraged to imagine ourselves as a member of a Bangladeshi family who had 30 minutes notice of an evacuation of their village. We could take 5 items with us – what would we take?

Working as a family of 5 or 6 people, we all took different things and had various scenarios thrown at us which meant we ‘lost’ some of our previous items. At the end of the exercise, we were left with only one or two things – sometimes of no use at all. It made us all think really hard about the perils so many have to suffer in such situations and was well worth doing. Our final meeting of the year in November was held at the hospital but was so poorly attended that we abandoned it after a short talk from Hugh Priestner the chaplain.

The other responsibility of the deanery is to allocate Parish Share between the parishes. This was done in November and the process will start again earlier this year to enable a more readily agreeable allocation later in the year.

Churchwarden

Churchwardens’ Report

Our thanks go out to all those who have taken part in the running of the church by being on rotas for welcoming, flower arranging, coffee, cleaning, the sacristans who prepare for the services, those who count and bank the collection each week and do the miscellaneous repair jobs that require attention. Special thanks go to Alan Robinson who has stepped down after organising the cleaning and coffee rotas for many years and to Kerry Tutchings who has taken on the responsibility for the cleaning rota. We still urgently need somebody to organise the coffee rota or we will soon be rather dry after the main Sunday service.

We have seen some staffing changes this year with David Robinson returning to parish ministry at St Mary Magdelene in September after many years of taking the 8 am Sunday service on the first Sunday of the month, a duty now covered by Owen Vigeon. Pennie Hartopp left us in October to take up her first parish at St Mark’s, Godalming and we were pleased to welcome and support at the start of her ministry a student, Hilary Iredale who joined us in November for 3 months.

Treasurer

Treasurer’s Report

I would like to open with thanks to Jean Hudson and Malcolm Tyler as members of the Finance Committee for their ongoing assistance and support.

This year has unfortunately been a repeat of previous years in that we have had to draw from our reserves to meet the running costs of the church which exceeded our income by some £4,700. There is a need therefore to increase our income and whilst the overall rate of inflation has only risen slightly, such things as price rises for gas and electricity which have a notable effect with a large building, have increased this pressure further. Our main source of income is the congregation’s giving and in 2008 we will therefore be providing everybody with details of our outgoings and asking them to review and hopefully increase what they give.

Quinquennial Report

Quinquennial Group Report

The last inspection of our buildings was carried out in April 2005 and the architect appointed by the Diocese reported some 30 items which required maintenance or improvement. The members of the working group set up by PCC to manage these works are Barbara Hancox, Mike Wakeman, Malcolm Tyler and Mervyn Hancox who is the chair. John Hartopp was also a member until he and Pennie moved to Godalming.

The majority of the more minor items which could be carried out by volunteers or organised through local tradesman such as a full electrical test, the fitting of a disabled toilet alarm and cleaning out the gutters have been completed. Faculties are required for the next two major items to be done which are the tower and roof repairs and the installation of emergency lighting in the church and centre for which the services of an architect who sits on the Diocesan Advisory Committee have been retained to supply the specifications and make the applications. He will then be looking at the heating system which needs upgrading or replacing, as this may need to be done before the plaster repairs which are required in church.

There is still a long way to go before we can achieve all that is required and I would like to thank everybody who has and who continues to contribute to the Refurbishment Fund.

Charitable giving has averaged around £2000 pa based on 5% income, calculated from the budgets of the 2 previous years. Despite the fact that St Mary’s expenses continue to exceed income, church members at the 2007 APCM expressed their continued support for charitable giving as an important way for us to show Christ’s love for all. Members asked PCC to consider how best to continue charitable giving in the future and PCC considered this at its meeting on 30 October 2007. PCC support the principle of giving 5% of income, and suggested this take place earlier in the church’s financial year, in April/May, rather than December as at present, possibly from 2009. They discussed the parable of the talents as a possible way of raising money specifically for charity. They agreed it would be helpful to ask other churches in the diocese about their charitable giving and Malcolm agreed to make enquiries.

Members of Mission Group are heartened by the support of the congregation and PCC. We met twice in 2007; giving totalled £1974. We received 28 requests for help from a wide variety of organisations and individuals and reported this to PCC on 20 November 2007. PCC approved our recommendations for 2007 giving as follows:

1) Vio - Home of Hope, Romania [Global Care’s Sponsor a Child project] £224

2) USPG – Archdeacon Stephen Taylor in Brazil £380

3) Coventry Myton Hospice Appeal £380

4) Headway [Coventry and Warwickshire branch] – helping people recover from serious head injuries £260

5) Gilead Community Development Centre, Luweero, Uganda – continued support c/o Nobby Clarke, St James’ Church, Fletchamstead £180

6) Yeldall Christian Centres – supporting their work with ex-offenders, in particular the homeless, alcohol and drug addiction. £380

7) Coventry Diocese Youth Project £150

TOTAL £1974

We continue to update Mission Board in the foyer throughout the year so that members of the congregation, and visitors to the church, can see and read the latest information. This includes newsletters, thank-you’s and photos/cards and details in St Mary’s website, including an extract from a talk about charitable giving at a “worship for all” service on 4 March 2007. Please continue to pray for the work of Global Care, for Vio and the Home of Hope children and staff in Romania; for Stephen in Rio de Janeiro; for Nobby and the people of Luweero; for the Coventry Myton Hospice fund-raising team; for Yeldall Christian Centres; for Headway [Coventry and Warwickshire]; and for the Coventry Diocesan Youth Project.

Worship Group

Following Pennie Hartopp’s departure to Godalming Worship Group did not meet for a few months and hymns were chosen either by myself or Reg Amos. We have however now regrouped and meet regularly to choose hymns for the Sunday morning services. We use the suggestions put forward by the Royal School of Church Music as the basis for our selections. This takes a great deal of the hard work out of selecting hymns as we know that each suggested hymn is appropriate to the week’s readings – it would seem strange after all to sing an Easter hymn in Advent for example.

We do also try to mix up old favourites with more modern hymns but acknowledge that we don’t always get it right. Musical taste being what it is means that we can rarely please everyone!

It is now our policy to sing only one hymn during the receiving of communion. This has been well received as it allows a little more space for reflection and prayer at this part of the service.

My thanks go to Sheila Wick, Margaret Davoll and Reg Amos who contribute faithfully to this work.

Readers and Intercessors Rota

Firstly I would like to thank all readers and intercessors for their generous help during the year.

In June, Malcolm and Tony Thistlewood arranged an evening tutoring session for members of the congregation wanting more information, help and practice with readings and leading prayers which was very successful. I am delighted to welcome Barbara Hancox, Keith Lashley, Kerry Tutchings, Chris Foxon and Rodrigue Mukadi to our list of readers.

We nao have 35 readers, 12 of whom also lead prayers.

We always welcome new members to our rota so if you would like to take part in our Sunday worship by reading or leading prayers and would like more information, please speak to Malcolm, Tony or me. We will be extremely happy to help.

Sacristans

Sally Vigeon, Betty Dakin and I form the Sacristan team at St Mary’s. We ensure that all the things needed for communion services at St Mary’s are in place.

We prepare the vessels and launder the linen as required. It also falls to us to set up the hymn boards each week.

I normally prepare the vessels for the Wednesday service on Tuesday and then get them ready for a Sunday after the Wednesday service. If I am unavailable on Wednesday, Sally usually gets things ready. Betty often sets up on a Sunday morning.

The silver is regularly polished especially before major festivals and we take pride in ensuring things run smoothly.

This is my last report as leader of the cleaning team – I resigned last September – and I would like to thank all the members of the team for their efforts in keeping St Mary’s looking so clean and well cared for despite the deteriorating fabric.

Kerry Tutchings has taken over as leader of the team and my thanks go to her. I pray you will support her as well as you have supported me in the past. Many thanks.

Sunday Drinks Rota

This is my last report as rota organiser I resigned last September and I would like to thank all those on the rota who have supported me so well in the past. Your support has been much appreciated.

Incidentally as far as I am aware, no one has yet volunteered to prepare the new rota, which I know isn’t needed until July but time passes quickly.

Unless someone comes forward I am afraid there will be no more drinks. No rota, no drinks!!

Bells

With the departure of Andrew Tyler to university the number of bell ringers available for ringing at St Mary’s was seriously compromised. As a consequence it has been almost impossible for bells to be rung prior to the Sunday morning services for some time.

Practice night has continued on a Monday but on a fortnightly rather than weekly basis when ringers from other towers join in.

We were fortunate to be able to maintain ringing rounds for Weddings during the year with assistance from other towers.

Hannah Tyler and Sarah Tompkins regularly practise with the ringers at Stoke on a Wednesday evening and at many other locations wherever possible.

Those who would like to try their hand are welcome to do so (adults and children alike); please have a word with Hannah Tyler. It would be good to see our Tower ringing regularly again on a Sunday.

On a slightly sad note, a recruitment drive in the local area produced no lasting new ringers, but those who do ring continue to enjoy it.

Lazers

At Lazers we have between one and four teenagers, this is due to the teenagers doing other things in Church. The teenagers enjoyed playing their parts in the Christmas play which was slightly different from the past nativity.

Over the next few weeks we will be looking at the different ways we meet Jesus, how Jesus seeks to be our companion and guide.

The teenagers are always very keen to give their opinions and are very knowledgeable on matters in the bible; they always join in with answers on what subject we are discussing.

Beavers

Beavers meet on a Tuesday night between 6.30 pm and 8 pm at St Mary’s Church Hall. Our beavers are aged from six up to eight when they then go up to cubs.

Our numbers are about fourteen at the moment as a lot of Beavers went up to Cubs in the last three months.

In the past year we have been busy doing lots of stuff. We went for a visit to Draycote Waters with the sea cadets, the beavers had a great time on the different boats I think they all enjoyed seeing the leaders getting very wet when the sea cadets decided to make waves!

We enjoyed going to MacDonald’s at the end of the summer term.

St Mary’s held the district carol service which was very well attended. The Beavers also made cards and gifts for the residents at St Martins lodge, which we distributed when we went to sing carols. Special thanks to Malcolm and Margaret for their help with this yearly event.

Beavers also attended a Beavers Christmas party at Rough Close. The children had a great time even though it was freezing cold.

We had a visit from R.A.G.S. who bought along with them a selection of Rabbits and Guinea pigs for the children to look at and hold.

Recently, the beavers have made Mothers day and Easter cards, also small gifts.

Beavers will be working towards their Global badge after Easter, looking at Fair trade produce, helping the environment and also recycling.

Sadly Lisa had to resign from Beavers due to work commitments, but she has agreed to help with trying to arrange trips and coming on them, we miss her very much.

Cubs

34th Coventry Cubs

It has been a very busy year with numbers increasing inthe pack so we have between 18 and 24 children attending each week during schoolterm time. We are looking at having awaiting list for new members, which we have never had before.

We are always very active in District events andcompetitions for the Cubs. Last year wewon both CUSO, a competition held for Cubs and run by the Scout Section,(through good teamwork) and the Road Safety Quiz. We also take part in the chess day, swimminggala, sports day and District water weekend camp. Two Cubs and one Beaver are also in the gangshow at the Belgrade Theatre and will be performing in March.

This year we are giving the children the opportunity togo on 3 camps through the Leaders giving up their time to plan and run extraweekends away. We are still short ofLeaders but manage very well through effective teamwork, currently having somevery supportive parents who will help us when they are asked.

Some of the Cubs and Leaders attend Church Paradewhenever possible around other commitments. They enjoyed having the Carol Service at St Mary’s, which enabled some ofthem to take part in the service by reading out parts of the story about thejourney toBethlehem.

In Cubs we aim to teach the children various skillswhilst having fun whatever their abilities. We feel proud to watch them develop over their time with us and go on toScouts with confidence and an expanding knowledge.

Scout Troop Report

34th Coventry Scout Troop Report

It has been avery mixed year for the Scout Troop. Theyear started with me and Colin assisting Bill in the Leadership side of theScout Troop. Then in October came thesad news of Bill’s death. He will begreatly missed by all the Leaders and Scouts for his great knowledge andenthusiasm in anything to do with Scouting.

On theScouting side we have had a very successful year. The Troop is still running with around 12Scouts. Due to age, 3 Scouts have had toleave the Troop, with 2 moving on to the Explorer section. These in turn have been replaced by Cubsmoving up to the Scout Troop.

We have amixed Troop and we try to provide an exciting and interesting programme. By doing this the Troop has again been verysuccessful in the District activities that we have taken part in:

Winners for the second year ofSMIJ (Scout Mini Incident Journey)

Winners again of the District WaterWeekend Raft Race. (They have toconstruct their own
Raft and then race otherteams around the lake atMarketBosworthWaterPark).

Winners of the District 5-a-sideFootball competition

We are alsocontinuing with the badge work. Thishelps the Scouts to learn many new skills and improve on existing ones. For the first time in quite a few years wehave our first Gold Chief Scout Challenge Award being presented to one of ourScouts and in the next 2 months 2 more Scouts will have achieved thisaward. This Award is the highest Awardachievable in the Scout section so our congratulations to all 3 Scouts for theirhard work and dedication.

All theScouts are a pleasure for Colin and me to work with. Always willing to have a go at anything wethrow at them, from cooking pancakes over a tea light to constructing full sizecatapults firing water balloons! We hopethat by continuing to offer this varied programme the Scouts will continue toenjoy themselves.

Salvation Army Band Concert

On Saturday 22nd September 2007 the Coventry City Salvation Army Band under the direction of Bandmaster Huw Ellis, entertained an appreciative audience with a varied programme of music. It total £490 was raised and shared equally between St Mary’s Refurbishment fund and the Salvation Army.

The date for this years concert is Saturday 27th September. The programme of music will once again be varied with several pieces of music following the theme “Soundtracks”.

I hope that as many as possible of St. Mary’s congregation, their families and friends will be able to support the concert and share in an evenings good music whilst contributing to the much needed church refurbishment fund.

PLASMA (Prayer Life at St Mary’s)

Plasma group has not met frequently in the past year, owing to the members other Church commitments. New members are welcome to join us and help plan new events for the future.

A Quiet Day was held last summer at St John’s, Wolvey. We were not so lucky with the weather compared to previous years, but as usual people appreciated a relaxing day.

An evening for intercessors and readers was held in Church and several new people who have joined the rota welcomed the chance to practice.

We have recently welcomed new people to the rota for praying after the 10am service.

The Prayer Tree (in the foyer) and the Prayer Book (it was on the Lady Chapel Altar) are still well used.

In the past year also, 15 wedding couples have been prayed for; 37 bereaved families; 21 baptisms; and 24 other occasion (e.g. illness, exams) have featured in the prayers of our Fifty Family of Prayer members.

Please ask me for more details if you would like to become more involved in this quiet but worthwhile ministry.

BRF produce books three times a year on two levels, firstly New Daylight which gives a good starting point by providing daily readings from the Bible and secondly Guidelines which is more advanced with in-depth study and commentary of themes alongside its daily readings. We currently have 10 people who receive copies of either New Daylight or Guidelines.

Last year, Pennie Hartopp and I tried to publicise BRF as part of a “Worship for All” service in July last year, but sadly no other church members joined the scheme.

If anyone has any questions or would like to see examples, please have a word with me.

St Mary's Butterflies Carer, Baby and Toddler Group

Another successful year for Butterflies.

Ann Rushworth finished at Christmas after starting the group twelve years ago.

A collection from mums, carers and helpers enabled us to make a presentation of two gift vochers and a plant at the Christmas Party to Ann with thanks for everything she has done.

Donna Cook one of our mums agreed to help out on the craft side until Easter. Alison, Val, Malcolm, Jean, John and Kate a friend of Eve’s have continued to help. Many thanks to them all.

Butterflies galore were made at a sponsored Butterfly afternoon, cakes, biscuits etc. £300 was raised for St Mary’s Refurbishment Fund.

There is a current waiting list of about fourteen.

After Easter Alison will help me with the craft activities and we are looking forward to another good year.

Music report

During the year the congregation have sung the hymns quite well as usual particularly as there is no choir to lead. Unfortunately there is still a reluctance to “have a go” at the lesser known ones. On occasions I have decided to play the tune set in favour of alternative better known tune. When I have chosen to play the set tune, I have received objections.

The hymns are chosen by the music group from the recommended selection given in the Royal School of Church Music quarterly magazine which reflect the particular themes week by week. The exception obviously is when we have all age worship when those leading the theme of the service select appropriate hymns.

Once more the organ has given us very good service and this is in no small way due to the twice yearly servicing by Mr John Burns our organ tuner.

My thanks again to Margaret and Geoff for standing in for me during my absence.

Flowers

I am quite certain that all who see flowers, whether they be in a garden, by a wayside, displayed in a vase or indeed a church, are always uplifted by their simple beauty.

Floral decorations have been used in places of worship for centuries as I am sure that they have been in our own church, and those that are displayed here in St Mary’s are lovingly arranged by a small team of dedicated ladies.

To arrange flowers in a church is a very special experience, so we are very priviledged.

Throughout history flowers all over the world have been used to embelish our places of worship but it is also important to remember that some flower arrangements have a message and they are not always merely there to look decorative. They become symbolic and express many different emotions, but whatever they represent they are always a joy to behold.

The Amen of nature is always a flower.

Servers

I’m pleased to report that the servers team is quietly growing. This season we have been joined by our Church Warden John Aspden and Kerry Tutchings with the possibility of one or two more in the near future.

Anyone who is interested in becoming a server, regardless of age, would be very welcome to join the team.

Serving is a very special privilege and I am happy to talk to anyone who maybe keen to try.

Fund Raising Group

My thanks to Barbara, Audrey, Gwen and Alison for all their hard work during the year. For various reasons we were not able to hold as many events as we would have liked, and as you will see from the 'Money Thermometer' in the foyer, we are still below our target. However, the 4 events held were

Beetle Drive
Quiz night
2 Stall at the Walsgrave festival
Christmas Fayre

Which in total amounted to a little over £1500.

We hope to greatly improve on this figure for 2008 and with your support I am sure we can. Please read the notice board for events and dates! If anyone has any fundraising ideas, please speak to me.
